Wolves leading the race to sign “gifted” gem who’s been compared to Kompany
Attempting to pick up where they left off in the January transfer window, Wolverhampton Wanderers are now reportedly leading the race to sign a Serie A defender this summer.
Wolves transfer news
Whilst they didn’t get their first choice options in midfield or within their backline, Wolves did at least welcome some much-needed fresh faces in the form of Emmanuel Agbadou, Marshall Munetsi and Nasser Djiga last month.
All three reinforcements are likely to have an important role to play as Vitor Pereira looks to guide the Midlands side away from the dropzone once and for all. Still far too close for comfort to what would be a disastrous relegation, Wolves enter Anfield in need of a shock upset over Premier League leaders Liverpool this Sunday.
They’ll also be hoping that Matheus Cunha does not get used to his surroundings whilst in Merseyside, with his fresh £60m release clause undoubtedly set to attract top suitors when the summer transfer window arrives. Liverpool manager Arne Slot certainly didn’t hesitate to praise for forward in the build-up to Sunday’s clash.
It could also be a busy summer on the incomings front at Molineux, however. According to Birmingham World, Wolves are now leading the race to sign Koni De Winter from Genoa this summer.

The former Juventus defender is still just 22 years old, but has emerged on Wolves’ radar after impressing at Genoa – where he has been handed ample opportunity to star.
“Gifted” De Winter can end Wolves’ centre-back troubles
Whilst Agbadou and Djiga would have been welcomed with open arms, Wolves still need one more central defender following news that Craig Dawson has been deemed surplus to requirements under Pereira. When the summer arrives, that should leave the door open for a player of De Winter’s calibre to complete their defensive rebuild.
The young defender has earned plenty of praise during his time in Serie A, especially from Antonio Mango when he was first breaking through at Juventus. The U23 scout went as far as to describe De Winter as “gifted” in 2023.
Speaking about previous praise he’s received, himself, De Winter revealed that he’s often been compared to Premier League legend Vincent Kompany – telling The i Paper: “All my life I have been told I play like Vincent Kompany.
“I have this ability to make runs with the ball like he did, I have the same technical side. It’s a really big name, so I one day hope to be able to live up to him. You look at the other big names (former Belgian Premier League defenders) and it is only right that they ended playing up in the best competitions.”
